Registering a domain yourself, WITHOUT paying someone to do it for you!

General question:
Everyone knows about the millions of places to register a domain name, but they all cost money.... I know people are out there laughing their head off over the lack of available information.

Is there a way to independantly register your own domain name without going through a "middle-man" service (yahoo, register, anything web-based)? What direction should I be looking in?

I'm not looking to mass produce domain names, just one domain name manually without having to pay for someones overhead (which I'm sure is just some guy who knows how to do what I'm asking.... hm, I won't hold my breath)

Thanks
Serpenthor

I thought you could not advertise in this forum?

It's usually cheaper to buy from a reseller than from the registrars themselves because they will have bulk discounts. For instance in the UK to buy a .co.uk domain from some resellers you can pay as little as £5.49 where as Nominet (the registrar) charge £80!!

It's the same for .com domains with most registrars.

Have a look around... you'll find some very good offers.

I don't mean paying for anything. Even if it's 1 penny.... I know that the guys who work for the registrars can EASILY register their domain without paying anything... It's a matter of typing into a command prompt somewhere (unix / linux)... anything web based is obviously going to charge money, that's the nature of .. Even if registering a domain was 1 penny, it's still too much if you KNOW how to do it yourself.....

somewhere out there, someone will read this message and order a hit on my life because I've thought "out-side the box" and realized that a domain name is is much like a folder on the worlds biggest computer (internet).... HA! it's probably in my DOS commands : md inetseller.com... cd inetseller.com... copy net\google\spider.exe... run spider.exe.....

it's just that easy!!!! I'm a nut
Thanks for the messages, I'm sure it's easy for people to advertise who they think is good after reading this message, but unless they get it for free, you guys are getting scammed. we're all getting scammed.

It's not an ad... it's a reccomendation.

And the only way you could run the commands neccessary to do that is to have access to the machines and usually held inside private networks and protected by firewalls and wotnot. So no... you can't do it and even if you managed to, as soon as the registrar discovered it, it would be removed.

In order to do it, you would have to do some serious hacking. Considering the time you've spent thinking about it, it would have been cheaper to just pay for it.

Stop being such a tight wad. Wink

Indeed, learn some economics, too -- domain registration costs money to maintain. The actual set up of the domain name is trivial. It's the maintenance of the system that costs money. Not just people, but server space, bandwidth, communications.

Not to mention you need $5,000 to become accredited from ICANN.

serpenthor:
ICANN and the goverment authorities and a few educational organization maintain the hold on the domain name management for the Internet. A domain must be registered in "tiers" You can not simply just type it in a command line that is not certified to be an authoritative registrar. Much like credit card companies have a processing and verification method, an ICANN accredited registrar is given a special privaledge to act like a CC processor, expect for domains. They validate and start a tiered process...

1 the root is checked that is your TDL. .com,.net, etc.
2 is the domain name register
3 is the whole combined...= mydomainfoo.com

If valid the registrar is given an approval to take the registration and the status is set to pending. Upon receipt of payment the ICANN registrar will send a confirmation back to the server telling it to mark the domain taken.

Now, if you would just like to have a domain name locally on a network, you simple need a DNS server and you can locally (on that LAN, MAN, WAN have you own little world of domains). On the internet however you can not gain free access.

Well, hurrah. Someone is at least able to admit they made an error in judgement! Probably the most complicated part of the way the internet works is the bit no-one sees: Domain Resolution.

It's understandable that someone who doesn't know the ins and outs of networking would come to this conclusion, I'm glad you're prepared to admit it Laughing out loud
