Well, hurrah. Someone is at least able to admit they made an error in judgement! Probably the most complicated part of the way the internet works is the bit no-one sees: Domain Resolution.

It's understandable that someone who doesn't know the ins and outs of networking would come to this conclusion, I'm glad you're prepared to admit it

ICANN and the goverment authorities and a few educational organization maintain the hold on the domain name management for the Internet. A domain must be registered in "tiers" You can not simply just type it in a command line that is not certified to be an authoritative registrar. Much like credit card companies have a processing and verification method, an ICANN accredited registrar is given a special privaledge to act like a CC processor, expect for domains. They validate and start a tiered process...

1 the root is checked that is your TDL. .com,.net, etc.
2 is the domain name register
3 is the whole combined...= mydomainfoo.com

If valid the registrar is given an approval to take the registration and the status is set to pending. Upon receipt of payment the ICANN registrar will send a confirmation back to the server telling it to mark the domain taken.

Now, if you would just like to have a domain name locally on a network, you simple need a DNS server and you can locally (on that LAN, MAN, WAN have you own little world of domains). On the internet however you can not gain free access.

Indeed, learn some economics, too -- domain registration costs money to maintain. The actual set up of the domain name is trivial. It's the maintenance of the system that costs money. Not just people, but server space, bandwidth, communications.
