Automatically logging in registered users and Saving passwords

I am actually wondering how other sites are able to recall my username and password. Once I start typing a few letters of my username, a small combo box appears displaying my username and once I click on my username, my password automatically appears on the textbox. How will I be able to do this?

I already tried storing the user's username in a cookie during the first time he logs in. What happens is that the next time he logs in, the login page displays the username and password of the registered user without waiting for the user to enter a few letters of his username.

What code should I include so that a small combo box appears when a registered user starts entering a few letters of his username on the textbox? Help!

I think the behavior you're referring to is built into Windows 98 and above. It's the O/S that saves the log-in info and generates the little drop-down list, not the site itself.

i remember ie5.0 asked me, to remember usernames/pw. if i would do so, the thing you asked would happen. i'd say, it's the browser.

but anyway, i don't like those things, no one should remember my pw except me... Wink

No, when IE asks to remember the PW, it says:

"Do you want Windows to remember this password so that you don't have to type it again the next time you visit this page?"

You won't get the same prompt using Netscape because only IE has the autocomplete feature.

You can find everything you'd ever want to know about Microsoft Internet Explorer's AutoComplete feature at MSDN:

Netscape 6 does have an auto save for usernames and passwords. You can select whether you want to save or not just like IE. However it does not support the AutoComplete of form fields.
