Hello Friends,

I noticed there are more than a handful of different scripting languages, markup languages, and many different methods to building a modern day website.

If I'm starting from scratch and I would like to build a professional website such as yahoo (homepage), Craigslist, e-commerce, etc...

A website that allows users to create their own accounts and such, what should I need to know?

Is learning HTML + CSS really a good starting point? Is HTML, CSS, CGI + Perl sufficient to having the tools needed to create a good website?

Realistically, do professional web-designers really sit down and write code to create a website or do they use some fancy third-party application that basically does all the work for them?

I have always wondered about these questions any help will be greatly appreciated.

Use Drupal, you don't need to learn any code. Once you've created your site do a search on drupal for ecommerce modules. Drupal 7 installs modules automatically.

Hello David, thanks for introducing Drupal to us. I have never used this tool so far, I just want to know does this tool just help us create website from templates? As far as I know, it is not friendly to Google is we use template to create our website. Sorry, I mean no offense here but I want to know more about this tool. Thanks!

Hi DavidIpswich, You recommended drupal but, from my experience of website building I've found WordPress is much easier than drupal, Joomla and other Content management system. Even I recommend all new comers to start with WordPress, Because of it's beginners friendly UI and hundreds of Themes and plugins. and WordPress has built-in support for automatic plugin and theme installation. Here are a few of webmasters blog post where they compared WordPress with Other CMS:

HTML, CSS are not bad but I prefer PHP for user-friendly use. And who is use some fancy third-party application that basically does all the work for them, he is not professional one.

I would suggest you to go step by step.
Get used to of HTML, CSS and js than go for some advanced programming stuff. You may also wish to jump into graphics as well so using graphics tools like photoshop etc. will also be good enough.

Having basic coding knowledge is good for web designing. However, people seldom use the coding to develop a website from 0. Mostly they are using the pre-installed script, such as Drupal, Joomla and Wordpress to develop the websites. Those pre-installed scripts allows you to edit the code. So, if you know coding, you can design outstanding websites.

I only know HTML & CSS and I have made a website. It depends on what your website must do. HTML & CSS is sufficient if you are only going to be writing articles or displaying images. However if you want any interactivity with the user, you will have to use javascript/php/asp.net etc.

To create a professional website, you must have well known about HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, Ajax, Javascript etc. that are enough. Yahoo is developed by using PHP scripting language.

Simply put, you can get through with developing a unique, non-script based website with the following knowledge.

- HTML
- CSS (If you're going to be styling your website) - Not Necessary
- PHP (If you're going to perform special functions) - Not Necessary
- MySQL (If you're recording data) - Not Necessary

You can do quite a lot on HTML alone, and HTML5 is looking rather promising.

Also, you don't necessarily even need MySQL, you can save data in text files / other types of files, but I would advise against this unless you know how to hide those files very well.
