I was just wondering if it was possible to get a cookie on your computer from a particular website if you didn't visit that website.

Not really.
However, if you visit Site A, which has a banner from Site B. Site B is capable of placing a cookie on your computer.

They are called 3rd party cookies, as Mark mentioned most come from banners but can also come from trackers (site counter/tracker). Most browsers have an option to disallow 3rd party cookies
