I am member of a Non-Profit Robotics Team with usfirst.org . Now i have decided i wanted to create a site Powercord869.com, i have bought the domain for 2 years with Prohosting. Recently i was confronted by another member of the team stating that if i use a .com ending on the site that makes it a company, some how he says that i will have to pay the gov't taxes. Hope you guys can tell me what to do. Thanks.

I suppose it depends on what part of the world your from, but if it's non profit, it's non profit no matter what the name.
I tried a couple of no profit companys (org's), most have .org but others (like savethechildren) have .org, .net and others
I think the .com (company) .net (network) ... started off that way but now is just letters that don't mean a lot (except .gov etc).
Why does your friend think you have to pay taxes? I have a .com and two .net's (only cause the .com's of them were taken) I'm not a company or org, I never pay taxes (mainly cause I don't make any profit) but even if I did I still wouldn't because who would I pay the taxes too? my Gov't? USA's Gov't? and then it gets tricky, if I did have to pay taxes (which I don't) does it depend where the server my site is on is located or where the bank the profit gets put into? what if they are different countrys do I have to pay two lots of taxes? or what if the server is in one country, domain name hosted in another, bank in another and me in another (could be as many as 4 countries)

If I'm not mistaking, ".com" stands for commerecial business. Anyways, I beleive the law says that you pay taxes in the country you live in. So for example, a lot of people in south Sweden take the train (10-20min) to Denmark because that's where they work, but because they live in Sweden, they pay taxes here. However, if you have your own company, then I beleive you pay taxes in the country the company is registered.

And NO, you don't have to pay taxes just because you own a .com, .net or .org domain name. You pay taxes only when you make profit.
