What Happened Last Night?

Last night I logged on to the internet and clicked my WMF bookmark and all I got was a message saying that the domain webmaster-forums.net expired and was up for sale. Well I'm very glad to see it's not gone forever! :sunny: Anybody know what happened?

And as long as I've brought it up, didn't this site have a prolonged (or permanent) domain outage several years ago? I remember the site being gone for weeks, and then luckily one of you 1000+ post'ers sent me a personal email letting me know that the site was back but in a different location. Or did I imagine all that on a bad acid trip? Didn't something like that happen way back when? Did these forums used to be on a slightly different domain name?

Yes, our .com domain got sniped a few years ago. The mods personally emailed everyone in the membership list to alert them of the new domain name!

It may be years later but "Thank You!" again to those mods for going through all that extra effort to lead us back home. Otherwise, what do you mean by "sniped"? How could something like that happen to a bunch of expert webmasters? Does the story make for a good bedtime tale?

Yar, 'tis a gru'some and horr'ble tale about the one that almost got away, ar, because we wasn't looking at the domain's exp'ry date. The rest of the tale be far too gru'some and horr'ble fer us to tell ye here, ar.

I went to come here last night, and felt such an empty feeling, like freinds were gone!

I was hoping it would be back up last night after payment of the domain, but still had to wait til this morning.

Glad it's back though!

Well, when I went to webmaster-forums.net a couple days ago, it said the domain had expired, and I could, if I so desired have snatched it up for $14.95 apparently, so.... someone dropped the ball.

Well yes, Chad has been rather busy in recent times, even after his return, given that he's just left his business and such. It's possible he missed the domain's expiry because of that. It's back though, and it looks like he registered it. Smiling

The rest of us should probably have monitored it too, since we've already had bad experience with domains. Next time. Smiling

When I went to the site the night it went down, and followed the links to pay for the domain name, it CLEARLY stated that all I was doing was paying for one additional year for the CURRENT OWNER and the registration would NOT change. It never indicated I could take it over.

Then once it was paid for, the message on the page changed to say something like the domain name had been renewed and would be back up shortly.

When I saw it was expired, and it would let me pay for an additional year, I figured the $15 for it was very little compared to the advice and information I get from this forum, so I went ahead and told it to do so. I didn't get an e-mail about it yet, however it could have been lost in all my other junk mail. But the page did change to indicate the domain name was paid for so I figured it was fine.
