We're ready! Finally, after all this work, we're ready to show you what we've got. Here it is!

A Padded Cell

The name comes from a longstanding joke we've had around here. Whenever anyone starts to act a little crazy we send them off to our virtual "padded cell" to recoup. We decided it would be a unique and fun name for the new site, and a testament to all the troubles webmasters go through when building sites. It is, of course, a silly pun on padded table cells Smiling Our site will be a safe place to recover from the craziness and learn how to get better Smiling

The site will contain all sorts of content. We plan to publish a range between beginner and lower-advanced level material. We realize that there are a lot of sites out there for the advanced web designer so we will try to reach all the beginners & intermediates out there who need help.

This is the start of pre-launch period where we will look for feedback, make sure everything is working smoothly, and start to get the site crawled by search engines. There are a few things missing right now and we are aware that the layout doesn't work right in IE6. The site will be launched officially in about a month. The forum will be updated with a matching design at that time.

Enjoy! And please don't hesitate to tell us what you think. We can only get better by incorporating your feedback and making a site that meet your needs. If you've got an idea for an article you can contact us about that as well. We'd appreciate any linkbacks you could throw our way too Smiling

Congrats on the unofficial/official launch... All I can tip in is replacing the default drupal favicon with this...

Oh and btw I'd be glad to help you out with anything... (articles, whatnots)...

Oh, thanks for the favicon idea! I have been playing with that trying to get something that looks decent at such a small size. I'll keep that idea in mind.

(I'm still really not happy with that logo BTW)

Would you like me to try a logo? (oh and we could start a logo contest also so it's a double hit. Free Traffic and a logo to come with it)

Honestly, I would only do a contest if we weren't bound to using the result (i.e. mostly for fun but if we get something good we might use it). Back when Chad was still around he tried to do a contest for a new design and it was pretty much a disaster.

What about make a logo contest for the new APC design but say that we are having some trouble coming up with it (designers block) and this contest will give us some ideas? That way, we don't have to be forced to use a logo we don't like. Kind of like pooling the community for ideas.

It's not the concept I want to change really, just the implementation Smiling I'm not opposed to ideas but I think this one could work if it was just drawn better. We do have a pretty strong idea of how we want to present ourselves so people would have to get that in order to come up with a concept that would work for us.

what are your thoughts on the logo? maybe I can implement it better... (or worse)

Mostly that it looks a little childish and not... solid enough? Too scribbly. If that makes any sense. We want to keep the informal and fun feel but this has gone too far.

I agree. It just doesn't really work for me and if I just saw it and the header and didn't know any better, I'd think it was a website to help children with their school homework.

I think it is possible to make it look too fun.

I for one am very suprised that someone mentioned cheese without Mark Hensler appearing and extoling the virtues of California Cheddar. Usually The Hensler can disappear for months at a time, then the moment someone mentions cheese on TWF he pops-up. Smiling

Mmmmm, cheese.

a Padded Cell our articles site!

Let's wait and see and he might pop up if we mention it more... cheese... cheese...

Well the name 'A Padded Cell' implies something light and fun, so I think the logo needs to reflect that.

Here's the mental image I get:

A table with a goofy looking developer trying to climb out....maybe hands up to head as in arrrrrrgghh!!!

What I'm thinking is that since you want to focus on standards getting out of tables etc....i.e getting out of padded table cells....

Make any sense?

That's an interesting idea ... I wonder how you would draw that (and who would draw it!). I'm not sure that would be best for a logo though - we'd need something simpler. That would be good to use elsewhere in the design though Smiling I like the connection to getting away from using tables.
