eh, maybe i'm misunderstanding something here, to be true i don't know all books available Smiling
a must-have is Programming Perl/Larry Schwartz, the legendary 'camel'.
about unix and linux compatibility:
perl is a programming language that works on every system, NT, linux, nextstep....
there are of course some differences in some system-commands but you can find out about them in the 'camel' Smiling

The book that I boutht and which brought me from "What is Perl?" to writting my own scripts is "Teach Yourself Perl 5 in 21 Days" by Sams Publishing. Now I am no expert... but I can start from scratch and end up with a completed script that does what I want.
