The only ones that I would buy would be Dell or Toshiba. Sony is the next step down.

Mac PowerBook G4
Laughing out loud
Mine has been flawless
The cost isn't as much more compared to PCs as it used to be
Seriously consider it! It'll be worth it

[edit]
D'oh you said $1000-1200 not $1000-$2000

Good idea staying away from Compaq, I had bad experiences with them. And HP too (same company now, eh?)
Dell is the best PieceofCrap company
Other than that, spring for another $400-600 for a Mac

Dell notebooks are generally pretty good. I have had relatively few problems with the 10 or so that I have at my company. I like the Dell Lattitude D500 with the Centrino chip. It is light and the Centrino chip even though it is only 1.4Ghz runs faster than the P4 2.4Ghz chip.

I thought about mentioning Apple's Powerbook but the price and it appeared that you were wanting a PC based one warranted against it.

If you choose a mac, you can get refurbished and used mac laptops that are quite good and will run OSX, which leaves you with the option to run anything on it. You can also get VirtualPC, which pretty well means your one machine can pretend to be three.

I have had no problems with my Dell Inspiron and had a dell before that too.

I recommend IBM notebooks. They are really well built and I've never had a problem with the 3 I've owned. I go with the T series as it's the best compromise of size and power for me.

Agree. Dell is good.

The plain fact is that some people are content with something that just works. People buy used cars everyday because they just work. I have a Dell 15 series laptop but it failed to satisfy me as the battery failed to give back up after a year. I would suggest to buy a laptop provides a good battery life also the cost of the battery is cheap. Go for the one which is has all the features light weight but not the high end one.

Dell is most running and having the best configuration in it. Other than you should better check your purpose with it. I think still if you want to go then dell is good for sure.

Get an HP while you can. Thing that turns me off of them right now is that they reversed teh default mode of the function keys. Most laptops, you hold down Fn and then press an F Key to activate things like brightness, volume, display modes, etc. Now (at least on the models in "consumer stores") these functions are the default, and you have to hold down Fn plus the key to actually activate using an F Key.

They seem to forget that there are many, many programs that have keyboard shortcuts tied to these keys, and some people like me, max out the use of such. Kept me from upgrading to a great deal on a 17" hp a few months ago.

I did love my HP DV4-2045DX until it drank a whole beer while using it at the DJ booth at a bar...

I just want to know why you don't wanna buy Compaq? because as I used it, it gives me such satisfaction I want. I find Compaq as one of the best laptop in the market, considering it is much more cheaper than all other laptop brands in the market.
