Multiple domains for the same website! Is this idea good?

I saw many times the situation when several domains are used for the same website. A common sense can be easily understood when for example different domains are used to demonstrate website pages are presented in several languages! But personally I don’t understand for which purposes the same website is made available under different domains in other cases? What advantages can be taken from displaying a website under different domains?

I believe that the search engines would not like this very much, because it would be the exact same content, but over different domain names. (Different sites)...

Although, you know they are meant to be the same, others may think, it is a site clone..

Depends what you mean really, say .co.uk, org, .com etc. are worth buying to preserve the brand, irrespective of whether it would be good for SEO (it isn't).

Together with hosting companies often provides free .com, .info, .net etc. What do you think about these hosting providers? Would you recommend to use their free domains or not! Personally I keep my domains and hosting separately!

It is always better to keep domain registration and hosting as a separate business for providers. For users, having separate control panel and a right to transfer to another registrar is enough .

Agreed; that if you want to preserve your Company Brand name, then it is worth buying .com, .net, .in ( or .uk etc. )

Also, it contribute in SEO if used tactfully.

Several domain name for one website is good for seo - despite some people will say search engines will not like it, we should not be interested in their wishes, as they work for us and for people who use internet.. This would certainly bring your PR upwards.
However, if there are several sites with the same content is one thing, but domains redirecting top one site is another.
