Background question

Just curiuos how you create a background similar to something like on http://cobaltsystems.com/true_index.html

That is the common left border background, where it is at least 1300 pixels wide and whatever pixels high.

The actual design would be achieved by making a new image, background colour whatever the main colour of the site would be. Using straight lines, draw a grid pattern, ending randomly at the right side. Merge or flatten the image, fill some of the resulting squares with similar colours and save it.

For a fade effect and other effects, you can also make the image first in a square and then paste that image onto a 1300Xwhatever new image and merge it and save.

In order to make sure it is seamless (repeating down without an obvious repeat line) use the shift image feature (if you program has one) and carefully fix the image or crop it so that it will repeat properly (in this case so that the outline line (lighter blue grid) is at the top and the image ends just before another grid line so it repeats properly without duplication of the grid line or one line of 'cells' being taller than the others.
