i know it is a time consuming job that you have but i believe that if you want to keep ALL your visitors coming back, you should not leave a message unanswered!! all answers are appreciated, and informative, its only a suggestion though!!

Well, it's not always that a moderator knows the answer. You may have to wait for another member to find your topic, and reply.

My 2 cents.

We do try to answer everything we are able to do at our skill levels.

I'm not sure if you personally have an unanswered question, so I'll just give some general (non-personal!) reasons a question may go unanswered:

1. No one knows the answer.

In this case, I tend to reply by explaining that I don't currently know the answer. I might offer to post later if I find it, or maybe offer a link that could help. This way the member gets a reply of some kind and knows someone has an eye out in case that solution shows up for me while I am surfing.

2. Moderator is Unavailable

Sometimes we get busy with life outside the web, or have to spend more time on the business side of things (working with advertisers, promoting, sorely needed site updates, etc.). While it is not permanent, it can delay us from responding as quickly as we would like. When I am gone a while, I come back and specifically look for posts with no replies in my forum so that I can offer a reply (Thanks to Lloyd, this is much easier now as he is VERY helpful as the second moderator of our forum).

3. A Case of "The Same Question (Again)"

Sometimes, a question is asked that has been gone over so much, nobody wants to discuss it another time through. This can often be solved by pointing the member to a previous discussion on the topic.

4. Just Overlooked It (Oops!)

If there have been lots of new threads or posts, one or more could be overlooked by accident. We try to keep up though.

Well, that was a long-winded post,
I'm going to go get some toast,
So I can sit by the computer and boast
that I had the post with the most.

A lot of us have jobs and other lives outside of TWF and the Internet. I run a hosting company which takes a ton of my time. I do visit TWF at least 2 times a day and try to make a couple posts, but I don't always get to make every post I would like.

Also, like John stated, some questions I don't have an answer for so I leave them in hopes someone else does have an answer for them.

Overall, I don't think many questions that *can* be answered go unanswered.

If you don't like the job the moderators are or aren't doing, go to thewebmasterforums.com I am sure there moderators have less post to reply to.

Really, nobody is keeping you here doubleok, and I am sure very few would miss you if you left. It isn't the moderators job to reply to every one of you post, especially if they don't have anything to say on your topics. There main purpose is to make sure the post are appropriate for their forum, it is the othere people on the forums that should be responding to your topics, and if they aren't then maybe your post isn't very good.

Randall is right (though his post was a little offensive (no offense intended Randall )). This is a community forum. It isn't the moderators only job to answer questions. We have to monitor and maintain the threads more than anything. True, we should answer questions, but none of us know everything. Like I stated previously, all of us have other things going on in live as well.

There are so many factors that relate to an unanswered thread. This isn't a forum where you ask a select few people the question. You are asking an entire community of very diversed Webmasters - one of which hopefully knows the answer.

I assure you a post doesn't go unanswered because the moderator just plain doesn't want to answer it.

Randall I'm just curios, what kind of bad things did DoubleOK.com do to you? It's obvious you do not really like him, do you?
No matter why you dislike him, there is really no reason to talk to somebody like this, sure not at TWF. You remember the flame-wars we had some time ago, and none of us want them to come back. Is that ok for you?

Back to topic: Moderators ARE supposed to answer every post, that is their job.
But we are as Chad said just humans with jobs, families and so on. So please forgive us some laziness sometimes...

May I ask to which of the forums you are referring to, dear Mr. Fairhousing?

I disagree with that sentence. Moderators are supposed to moderate the forums . That is, to keep spam out, delete inappropriate posts, keep members from fighting, and keep the forum clean overall. Moderators ARE NOT supposed to answer all questions. Appart from their special moderator functions/rights on the forums, they are regular members who might or might not answer a question whether they know the answer or not.

DoubleOK,

I don't think you did anything wrong to Randall... He was just making his own point

I agree, posts are left unanswered. I have tried to beef up my post replying so that I don't leave an unanswered one in my forums

Nobody did anything to me...

I just wanted to show my opinion, and I did so... It may have been a little harsh, but I am against 'watering down' things so that nobody is offended.

Guess I'm a little late. Here is my .02 worth...

Moderators are meant to watch over their forum(s), and they don't HAVE to reply to each and every post. I could show a few examples of people who are mod's and hardly post at all (not to be mean or anything). But I rarely see any posts going unanswered, actually I've only seen one or two MAYBE.

Randall: I agree with your post, but it could have been said a little more nicer(ly).

Anyway- with all this in mind, I'll try my best to answer an unanswered questions Smiling

Yikes! I thought this one had ended.

Hmm.. I know of two moderators that don't post much, but I know and understand why they aren't able to do so.

If the need be, JP will usually add an extra moderator to a busy forum to help out. If you see an issue, let JP or an admin know about it and I'm sure they will give it a look.

OK all, just to wrap things up
We sort of have an unwritten rule to answer all posts at TWF but it does get hard (not to mention boring) when we see the same posts over and over again/week in week out.

Anyway, I don't want to start this thread up again as it seems to have been resolved already.
Regards,
JP
