server cpu load - let's hear it experts
I was wondering based on what you think the avg. commercial server cpu is and knowledge of a banner exchange script, namely webadverts. How many banners could be served in a day using only 1% or less of the cpu load? Better yet if you could estimated how much of the cpu load say 1,000 such banner displays would take up.

I am not sure what the average commercial server cpu is but I would assume it is probably about a Pentium II 350 by now. I am not an expert in WebAdvert and my on-duty Sys-Admin just said he has never had problems with it.
There would be way to many factors to give you an accurate answer on this issue on a per day issue any way. The CPU load for any one site is never constant - especially when you have CGI or ASP on the site.
I am sorry I couldn't be of much help on this subject - If I had had more experience with WebAdverts, I could probably give you a more accurate answer. I am sure some of the larger hosts like Deb (FutureQuest) and Jason (Hosting Solutions) can give you a better answer as I would assume they have had experience with this program.

Well... it's hard to say really. We don't track CPU usage on a per-script basis, so I have no way of knowing when or if webadverts has any problems.
I will say that a few years ago (before I got into web hosting when I was just a regular old webmaster like most of my customers are now), I was using webadverts to run a banner network. The banners appeared on about 10 different web sites. I don't remember how much traffic those sites got at that time, unfortunately. However, my host at the time (a reseller of Powersurge) shut down the webadverts script for excess CPU usage. Now, whether that was due to running the banners on sites that weren't on their server I don't really know.
I will say that to my knowledge, we (Hosting Solutions) has never had to close down a site due the webadverts script, although we've had to disable sites for excessive CPU usage in the past that may have been running webadverts.
So really - it's hard to say - it depends on what you're doing with it, how much traffic you get, where the banners are running, etc. CPU load really cannot be correlated the way you're asking.
