server co-location - I don't know nothing, what's new
Hey:
Well, I'm looking at server co-location now. I've got the computer and place to co-locate with, but don't have the know how. Should I just pay them to do all the configuring or can it be done by someone that only knows basic things like html and how to install perl scripts, hehe? Clearly, I don't know jack. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Also how hard is it to maintain a co-located server, due I need a service plan or can a goof like myself pull that off?

From what I read, I think your best option would be a service plan... You have to know a lot more than just PERL and HTML to run a server
... Maintaining a server of any type is not a easy task and should not be taken on by anyone without experience. I would highly recommend finding a place that gives you some type of co-location plan that will also have them maintain and manage the server. Usually you can purchase a maintenance package but it is going to cost in the neighborhood of about $250/mo. which doesn't include your connection, rackspace, bandwidth, etc.
Could you tell me who you are going to co-locate with and I could be more specific on what you will need to have and do? Also, I don't know what type of operating system you plan to run but I would highly suggest UNIX because it is easier to find a place that will maintain and co-locate it and it is usually cheaper... It is also much easier to learn to operate than NT. If the machine is going to be UNIX, I would suggest you find some UNIX study materials because you CAN learn how to maintain the machine which would save you money. It isn't going to be easy no matter which way you go!
