IP Addresses - How do the ISP's get blocks of IP addressess....

As far as I know
Arin stopped handing out IPs directly back in 1997.

You can only get IPs from your "uplink",
if he has some left.

Until IPng is deployed it could become very difficult to
get IPs at all.

Who is your "uplink" ?

I am currently looking into the possibility of setting up my own server. I currently have 11 domains registered, and think it would be smart financially to consolidate them all on my own server. The problem is, I am in the process of doing the research involved ref: setting up the ISP, but I cannot find much information on how ISP's obtain blocks of IP addresses. Any suggestions or help?? Shocked

You can't get IP addresses by yourself. For the most part, you have to be a very large host or a providor like UUnet or AT&T. And if you are able to get them, you must purchase them in blocks of 256 and you must be able to justify use of 80% within a week, if I remember correctly. You will have to obtain the IP addresses from your host or providor.

So if I wanted to set up my own server, I would have to use someone else's IP address?? The way I understand it, is I would have to purchase 256 IP's, and justify using 80% of them within a week, when I only actually need around 15-20 of them???

I forgot to mention, I currently at this time do not intend to be a web host provider, or a reseller, I only want to set up a web server for my own sites. How do individual businesses set up their servers if they have to buy 256 IP's, most of which may or may not be used??? You can view the site I am trying to set up using the URL below. Go to the Fiske Publishing link, and you can read about what I am trying to do with the site. The only thing that I can think of the alleviate this problem, is to become a web host provider, which I really do not want to do, yet...

You are correct. In order to purchase IP addresses, you will have to be able to use 205 of them within a week. This is my understanding on how the IP address system works. We, as a host, can't even purchase our own. We must purchase them from our upstream.

You would most likely have to co-locate your server with a host or in your ISPs facility. They would then sell you the IPs. This is how most businesses do it.

Isn't ARIN responsible for assigning IP blocks?

So... the next question: is there anyway to purchase, say 500mb's of server space, and assign more than one domain name to the server space. Can this be done with one IP, or would I have to purchase additional IP's from my host?? I am currently with Liquidweb, and they offer 250 mb's, but only one domain name. Before I ask them If I can assign more than one domain name to the server space, I would like to know if it can be done, and how much it may cost if there is extra IP's involved.....

Yes, it can and is done (we support it). Most hosts do it. Whether the host does it with our without a IP address is their choice (most do it without as it makes the price to you cheaper). Usually, if there is no IP address, it will cost you from $2-$10 per month. With an IP address, it will cost you $5-$15. Both depend on the providor.

Hi Kilroy,

since you IP's have to be in the range of your uplink anyway.
(Otherwise routing could get very difficult and expensive.)
You should ask them for a small block (/4 or /5).

Having multiply (HTTP-)hosts on one IP is possible with http 1.0 upwards (I think all major clients use this protocol) and is called virtual hosting. But you can't do anonymous-ftp without an IP.
(Yes, you can, but it's complicated.)

Currently I am being hosted by Liquidweb. I'm not sure if they will let me do that, After Laborday, I'll e-mail them and ask them...
