I hope to gather some info here on how webhosts promote their businesses (especially when they have a small budget).
And what the best methods are to do so.

This thread could also be helpful for resellers.

I'm looking forward to this disucssion.

First, yes, there are quite a number of hosts that spam. Spam is something you can go without on the 'net... It is here and will probably always be here (as sadly as that is).

As for promoting, we haven't done a lot. We have a total of two paid banners in circulation - one you see at the top of this page and the other is on a site that isn't on the Web just yet. We have about 50 affiliates now and most of them use our banners in one way or another. That is all the promoting that we have done. The best promotion any company can have is word-of-mouth. We have gained most of our clients that way.

In my opinion the best way for a host tpo promote it's business is through it's own affiliate program and branded advertising.

And what about all those web hosting directories?

Is it worth advertising on these?
Or do you just list the hosting packges and don't bother about them?

And what about search engine placement?

You could try advertising in a webmaster forum Wink.

We haven't worried about search engine placement... I don't know if we are listed in any of them. As for Web Host Directories, we haven't done any paid advertising in any of them, yet. We have only listed our packages. We plan to, eventually, purchase advertising in some of the directories, if we feel it would be a good marketing move.
