Most of us come to places like this looking for information to fix a problem or to learn more ...

How did you learn/find out about HTML/Web design?
What did you search for when trying to learn more?
How did you find frontpage (if you use it)?

and any other insights into todays newbies.
Don't worry there is no test on friday am just curious if things change over the years.

Me, I discovered webpages when I was doing photography, a client wanted to post my pics on his webpage (made with frontpage), I had never been interested in websites before. I thought to myself, man that site sucks, I could do better. So I put my money where my thoughts were and designed myself a website - complete with animations, coloured backgrounds, comic sans text ... all the bad things lol. I had made a website in notepad that held together but wanted more, so I found websites I liked and looked at the source, trimmed it all down into sections and found out which bit did what and why. I probably did it all in the wrong order but a while later then I started looking for tutorials but all of them (well most) explained using capitals in tags, to me it looked wrong or ugly so kept coding in lowercase. Switching to XHTML wasn't a problem as i prided myself on clean code (back then, get lazy these days).
Back then validation was mentioned in one in ten tutorials, but bobby (508, wai ..) were around and mentioned a bit more. A lot of the tutorials were to advanced for a complete newbie even with the basic knowledge and all the minor ones were repeats of the very basic stuff.
I picked up php and css quite easily but javascript i could never get into, weird i know.

Does Anybody Use Google's Upgrade Storage?

Having a Problem to Create and Delete Database!

Recently i upgraded my hosting plan - free to business plan. Now i want to switch it over in Wordpress. I consult an expert and he gave me some suggestion that i need to delete my existing database and create another one, then import and install the Wordpress in my hosting panel. But when i logged in it seems so much complicated and hieroglyphic. I watched couple of tutorials but ultimately the result is zero. In this position can anybody suggest me some helpful tips?

Does Anybody Use Google Translator Extension?

To translate something in English i often used Google translator. But it's quite monotonous to open the google translator in a new tab and then copy that content and translate it into English. It is also quite time consuming. So i do couple of searches and finally i have got an add-on for my firefox browser. Now i just need to select the content using the left click and then on the right side it will appear a small box. By clicking this box it will show me the translation of that language into English.
What a cool thing!

Hi,

I am a Software Engineer and mainly an applications or middle-ware developer.

I develop mostly in Java, but use a number of other languages. Platforms include Android, Windows or Mac Desktop, using NetBeans, and Web application development using Spring MVC and Java Server Pages. I also use a variety of SQL Servers.

I have a lot of independent back end functionality written in Java and SQL which ports between these platforms pretty easily.

I have always shied away from developing web "sites" and I do understand that this is different from web application development, however I have frequently been asked to develop sites, though I have not yet succumb.

I am just at present very limited on time to learn new stuff, but am still an experienced developer having worked on a number of demanding projects. Also, (and no offence to the purpose of this forum) I have previously never really been very interested or motivated to develop web sites and when using sites I have always preferred boring but functional and efficient sites to fancy ones (though this may be beginning to change).

With this in mind I experimented by downloading a Resilient HTML5 CSS Template. I found I could very quickly and easily adapt it to a Java Server Page in Spring MVC and hook it into much of my pre-existing back end functionality. It looked good and worked well. This may not be the way many would develop web sites, but given my current position, i.e. skills, time, code assets, this is the way that seems to work for me.

I am not sure exactly how to frame my actual question, but here goes:

I am not great at customer facing. I have never been very good at selling myself or applying what I can do or what assets I have in the most useful light or context? How should I market my particular flavor of web "site" development? I realize this flavor comes with some limitations, but it also comes with some very great advantages. I am not quite sufficiently familiar with all the other flavors to leverage these limitations and advantages. How do I translate these into customer speak? What arguments do I make? What do I present? What do I play down (with honesty of course)?

I do hope this makes sense, please ask for clarity if needed. I am not really looking for someone to say Spring MVC JSP is for web "applications" not web "sites" or to say just use WordPress it'll be quick and easy, even though they may be right. It's just that the position I am in right now, I am better sticking just with what I know.

Hi,

This is our website URL: w-w-w-dot-bigboytoyz-dot-com (build in Joomla) And we upload many articles, videos and news on daily bases on this website. So many new URLs create everyday on this website and it is difficult to manually update the xml sitemap on daily bases.

So,we need an dynamic xml sitemap for our website which can add our newly generated URLs automatically to sitemap.

Can anybody suggest any Paid Dynamic XML Sitemap Generator Tool (compatible with Joomla) with unlimited pages

Or is it possible in any other way to add newly generated URLs automatically to sitemap.

Help! We just set up a new website shell (with no content yet) with the domain name AdFlipster.com and shortly thereafter somebody from MyPrankFiles.com was able to somehow obscure our index page with a page of his own which is clearly not on our server. I have asked them to remove it to no avail.
Any suggestions as to how I can get rid of his crappy page?

P.S. This is not intended in any way to be an attempt to promote our website, especially since we have not begun construction of it and it only has an index page.

JOOMLA Help! User admin, registration forms, resources

Hi Everyone!

Desperately need your help with our joomla site. Basically we have resources (white papers, checklists, etc.) that only registered users can access/download OR visitors that fill out a form.
We need:
- A form that allows them to either register (create a password) or just fill out the form (no need of a password)
- Send user info to Salesforce when a new user registers or fills out a form.
- Track using a data field with the resource they were on when they registered or filled out the form (in other words, track which resource motivated them to register). Could be a hidden field in the form.
- Upload a CSV file with our current clients with a username & password so that they don´t have to register.
- Integrate with our marketing email platform (currently looking for one btw- any suggestions greatly appreciated!) assigning users to the correct mailing list per their selection in the form. (not as necesary if we can download manually and filter through a data field)

Any method/plugin/extensions you could recommend? Would it be best to find an advanced form plugin or a catalog type of extension? If so, which ones?

Some pages not showing , 403 Error

I have a script that I downloaded from Codecanyon. Some pages not showing in my hosting. Blank page appearing. Files are fully developed in PHP . This script is running without any problem in some other hosting. So Problem is hosting related. I am getting permission error in my hosting. I also have 403 error. graphic button in drupal

I want to make a button on location on a php file that currently is just a hyperlink.
Currently, the code segment appear in a browser with the text "Donate now", but I want it to be a paypal button instead.

All this is part of a paypal module I have set up in Drupal. I have already figured out the proper way to use a .css file with this module to modify another aspect of it. And now I want to change the textual hyperlink to a paypal button.

The line of code in question looks like this in the paypal_donations_single.tpl.php file:

The hyperlink text appears in the browser as "Donate now". This text appears in the .inc file includes\paypal_donations.admin.inc:

Maybe there is an example somewhere that has a graphic as a '#type'.

I have an extensive list of modules already and when I did a grep-style dos/cmd file findstr command I found many examples. The one that looks the most promising is:

and the accompanying code looks like this:

I only need to figure out how to best assign this '#src" variable. When I looked into the $options settings, the complexity and flexability reached new heights and I think now is a good time to ask for some help online with more experienced Drupal scripters and developers. Perhaps there is an easier way to assign this value a hardcoded path and image name.

I looked around at the code to see how this array $options is used, I could not see where the 'image' part is assined to a graphic.

I need some help, advice, and guidance.

On the chance that I have been going down the wrong direction, I did a grep search on "donation-submit-button" since this is the class name of the html tag I am interested in:

Yes a table code in html I think would be an option but I don't know how to write the code for it.

Hi All,
Could you please help me find right CMS and plugin for building up site which collects basick info on title and post / artickle from other sites ?
Simple example would be a site that collects movies description from other sites like IMDB.com. This would work in a way that user enters the site, search for instants 'American Sniper' and gets the list of few sites that contains that movie description imdb.com, movieguide.org, ... with consolidated basic info about the movie like rating and type of movie with the link to respective web site.

Any information that would save me going through most popular CMSes and hundreds of plug-ins would be much appreciated.

BTW. Are there any working (free or $) scripts that would help me do the simple crawl through the web sites and collect data from them? Like simple just take a title and rating described in this or that html tag and save to the DB ?
