We've started using some of the new HTML5 tags on my employers website (stinkyink.com).

It's nice having a

,

and

tag etc instead of having to use id's and classes.

Only problem is you have to use a bit of javascript to force crappy browsers to render these things as block level elements.

I've been reading a great book called HTML5 and CSS3, Develop with Tomorrow's Standards Today by Brian P. Hogan. It's great because it shows how to use the new rules and design fallback methods for browsers that don't support it yet--including the code that works--even going back to IE5 and IE6! I'm really excited about it and have implemented it to a small extent on a new web site I'm developing.

I just read a pretty decent (read easy to follow, but informative) book about HTML5 online: http://www.diveintohtml5.org. It gives a good background on HTML up until now and even previous internet advancements that emphasize why HTML5 is so desirable.

I plan on using it when building my next website. I think the most exciting thing for me are options with form elements (the calendar type, email, etc.) and automatic validation. Unfortunately they aren't widely supported just yet as far as I know, but they will make forms even easier when they are.
