There are different types of spam controls in word press. In my opinion Akismet is the best tool for controlling spam in word press. Akismet (Automattic Kismet) comes bundled with every copy of Word Press, and all you need to do to use it is sign up for an API key with Word Press.com.

I've had real good luck with Akismet, there are some other plugins out there, just search the word press plugin site, and make sure to check the ratings

Well, I guess I should be happy that it's only letting through a handful (usually in moderation). I had 181 caught by akismet today alone. Which makes me wonder why I'm getting so much, it's not like I have a huge amount of traffic.

I have about a half dozen Wordpress sites all using Akismet. I will get a spam comment held in moderation a couple times a week.

Every once in a while though I might get bombarded, almost like a bot is targeting all sites on my IP range or something, but nothing unbearable compared to what it could be.
