Yes this is a quiet storm. It's a topic that we usually take for granite, but requires attention. You are correct. You just can't trust spell checks. They are a great guide, but one must actually do a read over. It's really great when you have a staff to read over your material.

Nothing beats the old fashion self knowledge of spelling, grammar and vocabulary.

It is, but the fragmented sentence thing is annoying. It does a pretty good job considering it's a computer trying to asses a sentence, but still fails far too often.

Spell checks have their weaknesses. I have a friend who is a lawyer, and he types the word "public" a lot, well spell check will not tell you that you misspelled it when you actually type "pubic". (I set his auto-correct in word to automatically change pubic to public).

Now for actual misspellings, give InSpyder's InSite a try. It does actually have a (IMO) weak dictionary, and will flag some things that really are good.
