kazimmerman wrote:
We would all be rebelling against different people and no resolution would come from it.
Apart from those of us who don't strike would be able to charge what we wanted

As kazimmerman said, webmasters are not a global collective org or body of any kind, most of us are freelancers, so would basically be striking against our own current private clients.
After being puzzled at us claiming some sort of strike with them, they'd simply find another webmaster.

Bigger companies, web dev companies and SEO companies etc would also simply be striking against their private clients or other businesses.
Which is not really the point of a strike, as most freelance webmasters and companies provide a quote of their own choice, usually from a pre determined hourly rate.
And of course pay/working conditions are set out by the freelancer/web dev company, and there is generally no workplace or actual permanent contract.

If you work for a company as a web developer, then of course strike action could be taken, but then it's no different to any work force striking, and isn't what you asked as far as I can tell. As with that scenario any "changes" would simply be within the company you worked for.

So for freelance/non contact work, I see no benefits even if every webmaster in the world joined force and agreed to strike. It would push more people into the industry as there would be a gap to fill.
Pay and costs may well go up temporarily while we are all on strike, due to a massive demand for webmasters. But as soon as the strike was over (when people get hungry and start to remember they have bills) there would be nothing changed IMO.

Apart from a lasting memory of a global phenomenon...

Well, certainly workers at Google and Yahoo! could go on strike and that would cause a stall in development there for probably...oh, a day or two until they resolved the problem. Web developers/designers in general couldn't really go on strike because we don't belong to one central union or work for one company. We would all be rebelling against different people and no resolution would come from it.
