Xtron: ATi stopped supporting a bunch of graphics cards and there was a problem with Intel (fixed now I think, you should get a kernel update at some point). ATi have dumped support for graphics cards over two years old it seems, which sucks. So, if you have an ATi or Intel, the chances are your desktop is no longer hardware accelerated.

Try running glxinfo | grep 'render' from the command line, if it says 'direct rendering: no' and/or 'Mesa' in the OpenGL renderer string then chances are you've lost the graphics card accelerated desktop with Jaunty.

How much different do you think the PPC version is found on This Page are from the x86 versions?

Well most of the packages in the x86 repositories should also be in the PPC ones. Most noticeable omissions are Flash and Java. Frankly though, I've never tried it.

How much different do you think the PPC version is found on This Page are from the x86 versions? I am thinking about switching my powerbook to linux and am thinking about debian or ubuntu. I don't want to download a dvd image on our dsl or I would try YellowDog.

I installed a fresh copy of 9.04, everything about it is great but I seem to have speed issues, even though 8.10 was fine and my computer isn't the problem, just seems choppy for me. Other then that it's great.

Sorry, I was referring to the update notices not the notification system - that I kind of like.

I also totally hate the new version of Ararok which came with this release. I couldn't even figure out how to get it to play the way I want it to (after, like, 5 minutes of trying but still...)

The new notifications are kinda cool, except I don't think someone signing into IM justifies one of those alerts, there is a way to disable it though.

Looks like other people found the shutdown confirmation annoying. I will see if I can find that gconf key when I get home this afternoon.

A few things I've noticed so far:

The new notifications system is really annoying. Instead of icons in the tray the actual dialog pops up in the background. And there's a little flash over the active window when it does that. Once it actually popped up in the foreground after I had been ignoring it for awhile. I thought the old system was fine, don't know why they changed it
The new shutdown process is annoying because you have to confirm that you really want to shudown. How often do you shutdown by accident? For me not often I thought the old shutdown menu was fine (but they keep changing it)
Whatever was wrong with my wireless applet seems to be fixed

Although I did post another message in this thread that isn't showing up, but it is quoted by pr0gr4mm3r above.

About the nvidia problems - I can't remember exactly what happened but it just wouldn't recognize my external monitor. It's not actualy dual monitors - it's an external monitor connected to a laptop. Not sure if that should make any difference or not... I know other people have had problems with nvidia and Ubuntu 8.10.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a test box to see how some of the new advancements are working out. Turns out, it has support for my mobile phone (SGH-A707) out of the box now...w00t!!!1
