I would love IE8 to be rolled out to ALL IE6 users - hate IE6 having recently spent hours redoing submenus that worked in everything BUT ie6.

From a Wired Magazine report of a discussion with Microsoft experts:

Quote:
There is no official roadmap for IE9, but native SVG support is likely.

Microsoft already has its own version of SVG - VML. Using JavaScript to negotiate these two technologies lets you do rounded corners, vertical text, stretchy images, and a whole lot more besides. Admittedly a bit of overkill for rounded corners, though.

Where did you get that from?

Where did you get that from? I'm shocked that they would be supporting SVG since they've always been against that since it's a threat to silverlight (although I found one reference saying it would be supported in v. 9). I can't imagine that using SVG would be preferable to a properly supoorted border-radius.

IE8 is out now, not "due by the end of the year" - or are you talking about IE9? I'm a bit surprised that they're planning on having another new version done in 7 months...

Microsoft will likely support some CSS 3 in the next version, due out by the end of the year. They also announced SVG support, which will give us a better way of making rounded corners. (At the moment, "border-radius" is implemented differently across those browsers that support it.)

Here's a summary from Microsoft:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc304082(VS.85).aspx

Not too many new additions, mostly compliance updates. And no border-radius. They do have some of their own properties with the -ms prefix (same idea as -webkit and -moz)

Here's are some compatibility tables with all the major browsers:

http://www.quirksmode.org/css/contents.html

Oh, there will stil be

Oh, there will stil be problems with compatibility! I'm not expecting that to go away. I imagine by the time IE 6 ever gets phased out entirely the other browsers will be far ahead again.

An immediate example? IE8 doesn't appear to support border-radius (sure, Opera doesn't either, but I'd expect them to get caught up a lot sooner... will have to check to see if they have it in their next release).

Question: is Compatibility view the same as IE7 view? In the beta of IE8 I had there was a big IE 7 button for switching back and forth but now that's gone...
