I have a HTC Touch Diamond,

I have a HTC Touch Diamond, and with my plan with Alltel (merging with verizon), since it is a windows mobile device, I plug it into my laptop via USB, and in the hone choose Internet Connection sharing. Works great!

Here is the dumb part. I cannot use the browsers installed on my phone while I'm making a phone call. However, while connected to my laptop, I can make and receive phone calls, and remain "online"... weird.

That is not a special matter, that's a very common matter now. If want to access internet facility in anywhere, you can use 'plug to surf' or 'data card' eassily. Various company povides the facility with a high speed.

I tend to use my USB Modem

I tend to use my USB Modem which i have my phone plugged into. It seems to work fine, even whilst moving on buses, etc.

There are so many devices which can be bought. It might be worth looking around.

I know that Verizon and

I know that Verizon and Sprint offer a USB EVDO modem that uses your mobile account for internet access - I think the service is about $50/mo and the modem costs about $150 but there are also rebates available. I haven't tried it or read any reviews.

I find that *usually* wifi works, especially in urban areas where there are free municipal and commercial networks, and unsecured private networks available.

My uncle in rural Mass reports that he cannot even get DSL and uses a satellite dish with 128Kbps bandwidth.
