I would recommend looking on sites that measure server uptime for webhosting companies. That will tell you alot about a company.

Ask whoever you are thinking of going to give you some website addresses that they already host. Check out those websites and see how fast they load, especially if they have a lot of images. I have found some hosts to be VERY SLOW! Don't rely on their hosting site, look at an actual existing customer's site!
