If a server is properly configured and you have manuals on server management you should't have lots of trouble managing your server. If you aren't sure of your abilities you can get server administration on an hourly basis. HQHost.net offers this, I'm sure a lot of other companies, too.

Unmanaged servers can be hard. It means that the hosting company will give you access to a box with a standard configuration. That's it. You're on your own from then.

We deal with *nix boxes and I'm fortunate enough to have the help of a professional administrator. You can cope on your own if you know sys admin. but the hosting company will not help you if you screw up your box. All they'll probably offer to do is re-image the disk and you're back to square one. Hence cheaper.

We run MySQL database, James email and Tomcat web servers, with iptables port forwarding. You have to decide for yourself if this sounds difficult.
