Your technical skills sound

Your technical skills sound impressive!!!! As a web designer, however, you also need to know about design. I learnt largely by looking at other designs on the internet and seeing what works and what doesn't. I then tried doing similar - but not identical websites - to the ones I liked and gradually started learning for myself what did and didn't work. I bookmarked interesting website designs under headings such as wide screen designs, in the box designs, interesting masthead designs, interesting navigation designs etc.

If you are interested, you might check out 4 Top Tips for Website Design to see illustrations as to the importance of good and effective visuals, borders shading, slogans and subheadings.

That's a very good start. Rather you than me! Best of luck anyway.

That sounds like a good list

That sounds like a good list of technologies to know for a web designer. One small addition would be a vector design program like Illustrator. Really, with software, it's more about the general techniques than the particularities of one program.

Knowing a little bit of php would be helpful, and how to set up databases so you can run scripts such as Wordpress. Speaking of Wordpress, knowing how to design themes for common platforms like Wordpress and Drupal would be helpful

There are a lot of other things you'll need to learn to become a good designer: layout design, typography, colour theory, usability, graphic design etc. These are the tough parts!
