Well, there are many subtle differences among the many packaged options out there.

My advice is to choose the one closest to your goal, then adjust from there.

The main thing would be the display of the images (slide or crossfade etc) so you have said "slider" is what you want.

If the package is well-written, you should not have much trouble theming it with css and adding or removing elements like dynamic links and titles.

I have also been working with the Mootools e2_photo_gallery which has a php uploader and auto thumbnailer

I found the code pretty easy to customize.

In this viewer, I disabled some parts, and added automatic change, with dynamic titles and links to the Drupal photo galleries.

You can have a slideshow with images of the same or different sizes or else you can just use it to give a larger version of an image without the ugly "opening a new window". I found it fairly easy to install.
