I tend to prefer FreeBSD on servers and Linux on the desktop.

Linux has more drivers for more devices, and FreeBSD is very flexible as a server. But, really nowadays there is not much in it. If I was honest I do it to make sure I am in slightly different environments.

For Linux I tend to run Gentoo and Archlinux on systems, routers well I tend to go OpenBSD As you are asking you will want to go with what you are comfortable with, unless you fancy a bit more spice in your tech life. I do like Solaris as well

It's entirely a matter of which one you're used to and prefer best. If you don't care, go with Linux as it's what software developers expect. Most howtos you'll find assume some form of Linux.

I believe FreeBSD has a better security record though. So if you have time, download and try both on a home server and see which you like best.
