I know years ago when I compiled my own gentoo kernel to my hardware, I read that they where going to make that all automated. Perhaps only gentoo? I have been out of the linux scene for a while, might have to do some catching up...

Linux kernels aren't custom compiled on installation anymore. I do remember reading that Gentoo did that, but I'm pretty sure that even they use already compiled kernels on installation now.

They only time you would run into a problem would be if you tried to use an x86_64 kernel on a 32-bit machine.

I would have thought windows xp would have been more likely to work doing that than linux.

I have never been able to do that with WinXP. Even upgrading the motherboard or processor breaks it from my experience.

Have you tried downloading the ISO over again? It might just be the download that's borked. I've had that problem myself before.

I got a new home server several months ago, and I didn't have time to redo all the software setup and configs, so I just removed the hard drive from the old one and stuck it in the new one - worked like a charm.

Yes you can. I got a new home server several months ago, and I didn't have time to redo all the software setup and configs, so I just removed the hard drive from the old one and stuck it in the new one - worked like a charm.

Have you tried to Google-search the entire error message? That's how I solve my Linux errors 95% of the time.

What error are you getting?

I can't remember. They just showed up when I was running that check CD thing. But I switched to another CD drive that DID work with Ubuntu and hooked it up to that computer, and it still didn't work.

That USB thing is good to know about, but my bios doesn't take too kindly to those new fangled devices.

I'm going to try and install 6.06 and then upgrade it. Hopefully that'll work. And it probably won't...

What error are you getting? I remember coming across a couple of confirmed bugs related to DVD/CD-ROM drives.

The Ubuntu docs have several methods of installing from removable media found here. There is also a website dedicated to running Linux from flash drives, found here.
