Putty is something I use to connect via SSH to my server.

I use PuTTy. Like Megan says, it's a client for SSH and Telnet on Windows, but it can do other things too. You can use it to create an SSH tunnel if you're using VNC to remotely control a computer. If you download PuTTYgen, you can create SSH keys so you don't have to type in your username and password every time you connect. I'm sure it does other things, but that's all I use it for.

Just a heads up, the keypad won't work in Vi if you use PuTTy. Here's how to get it to work:

Putty is an ssh client for windows. I'm not sure if it does more than that or not. I used it a few times but now I find it's much easier to ssh from the command line.
