I always use the Suckerfish drop down menus from HTML Dog: http://www.htmldog.com/articles/suckerfish/dropdowns/

When you say vertical is the menu vertical or the popus appearing vertically positioned compared to the menu?

I would favour CSS menus over pure Javascript/DHTML menus because JS/DHTML ones are not search engine friendly (usually)

A good place to look for menus like that is Dynamic Drive. You might also consider a CSS menu (I think you have to ask permission to use those menus on CSS Play).
