XAMMP is better. It have modules for Perl and python, and may install Posgress database if you want. I the most complete package to develope Apache, PHP (Perl, Python), MySQL (Posgress) and install FTP Server and mail server.

I didn't know how a forum worked or PHP either. I still uploaded my forum, set it up in the admincp, and away I went.

I learnt all the settings how to set it up, in a day, and where to place different moddification code in the pages about 8 days. Now I can do it blind folded. It gets easier trust me..The only hard part was actually getting information about the damn chmod! to me like, WT* is that? Had to check my host for the info. Nobody actually tells you its an option in your admin control panel in your database for permissions. Sort of like your services thingymabob in WIndows XP.

Try just uploading, and each time yo uhave a problem, go to google and Im sure youll find the answer or code ...I had about 3 thousand questions, and all were answered, most came from vBulletin board and other places. (If your using vB of course, you should check them out.)

Here's the tutorial I used when I installed Apache, PHP, and MySQL. It works pretty well, but I seem to remember that a couple of the settings they tell you to set and a few directions are off. If you need some help, I may be able to remember if you ask.

Another tool worth looking at - if you haven't installed any of the previous recommendations - if Apache 2 Triad (http://apache2triad.net) it comes with Apache 2, PHP5, mod_perl (allowing you to run cgi script) Awstats, Open SSL and many other software.

Alternatively, I would try any of the tutorial teaching you how to install apache, php and mysql. At least if something goes wrong once you're site is up and running, you might be more inclined to try to sort it out by going in the apache httpd.conf or the php.ini

Another free package well worth checking out is XAMPP from Apache Friends. Installs everywhere, and does not mess with the Windows registry on PCs.

Download AppServ (http://www.appservnetwork.com/) and install it. It will give you apache, php, mysql and phpmyadmin. All of which you will need.
