I think a dark red, close to the theme colors here at forums would suit it although it is hard to tell without a larger look at the rest of the design.

I agree about going with the wood tones. Try that and see how it looks, or just go a little darker or lighter with the gold.

It's a little hard to say without the rest of the website, but I would probably go with a black or something dark red to complement the wood tones in the background of that banner. Just my opinion.
