I had a friend who is a lawyer have me set his MS word to auto correct the word PUBIC to PUBLIC becasue several times he did type that and spell check wouldn't catch it...

It's sort of like when people put really small text on a website. "Well, anyone can read what it says, so what's the problem?" The problem is that it gives me a headache! With spelling, the problem is that it looks careless. There should be no excuse for not running a spell checker. Almost as bad are the mistakes the spell-checker doesn't catch, which just make people look dumb.

I definitely agree that students shouldn't be allowed to get away with bad spelling. Do they even teach spelling in schools anymore??

The sad truth is, grammar and spelling are going out the door in many places. Some schools don't care about spelling on papers written, pass it off that spell check will fix it for them... Hello... if you are counting on spell check to fix it, but you still get spelling mistakes on the paper, you should loose points!!!!!

This is quite old now, and somewhat debunked, but still interesting. There's no evidence that any research was conducted as claimed (at least at Cambridge), and it's easy to devise counterexamples to the principle proposed. But it can be pulled off with some texts, and that's cool. The exact text has evolved as the meme spread across the internet, which is also curious to observe.

The links on the Snopes page about this are interesting, especially the ones to Matt Davis's discussion and Uncle Jazzbeau's post.
