&lt;p&gt;For search engines, meta tags don&#039;t really matter much anymore. The most important thing on your site is the  and  tags (,  etc. to a lesser extent). You also have to make sure the bots can follow links around your site. Links should not be in javascript or flash. Plain HTML is best for the search engines. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;After that, SEO has a lot to do with what happens outside of your own site. That is, you need to get links to your site from other relevant sites. Ideally you want respected sites in your topic area to link to you, but you can also try web directories and things like that.&lt;/p&gt;
