There's one more thing too - many ISP ship a customised version IE with Google UK (UK results) set as the default search engine so it is really important to make sure you're listed in there.

Yes, I knew that. But I can find info on the UK or anywhere else very easily using Google, rather than Google.com. I can maybe understand on-line shopping, because of shipping...but then again many places are now shipping internationally much cheaper than previously.

Because we live in the UK and use it to find information in the UK.

Google.com gives a US centric search result which is of little use to us Brits trying to find information or on-line shopping.

So that my clients can be found on Google UK if they don't have a .uk domain.

I only recommend Unix/Apache hosting due to the problems created by Windows servers throwing out duplicate content that can lead to a site being penalised by Google. I have a couple of sites under my control that run on ASPX so I will need to host them on Windows IIS.

Out of curiosity, why in the UK? Many people find it beneficial to not host anywhere near them, especially since the cost may depend on location (easy access to a main pipeline = cheaper)

Again, why do you need both UNIX and Windows? Why not choose one or the other?

I personally host with MediaTemple ([url]http://www.mediatemple.net)[/url], and it's great. I use the GridServer plan, and host (right now) 4 different sites, multiple subdomains, and run something like 10 MySQL dBs. Besides being in the UK and Unix/Windows, they fulfill every requirement you could imagine.
