I assume the OP has got some server administration skills as he's going to build a server himself, but I'd like to ask what's more profitable in terms of finance: building a server and then colloing it or buying dedicated one?

If you're going to use your own equipment that's usually considered colocation and you'd be responsible for managing it. You'd probably be able to find some places that would be flexable, though.

Is physical access to the server a primary requirement for you? If not, you could possibly go with one of the major data centers in the U.S. You could certainly win on the cost with the UKP/USD conversion ratio in your favor.

I would also suggest that you review the information security policies of the providers under consideration. This is particularly important if you are required to be in compliance with ISO or British Standards.

I'm tempted to do this as well, have you tried contacting a data centre directly? These guys for example: http://www.telecityredbus.com/ there's another popular one in London, but I've forgotten the name of it.

Do the data centres not demand you use a certain minimum number of machines? I'd be interested in hearing how you get on with this, keep us informed.
