I wasn't implying that the web host was at fault for insecure passwords. However, any web host worth its salt should be backing up your site on a regular basis. And if they aren't, it's easy enough to find a different web host that does.

Although I do agree you should have your own backup. But I was addressing this specific situation, in which it's too late if there isn't already a backup.

Hey... don't blame the hosts , it's not their fault if your site passwords weren't secure. Yes they might have a backup but you should also ensure that you have your own. What if the data centre gets blown up? (there was recently a terrorist plot to blow up the UK's main data centre and that hosts sites for about 90% of the UK's hosted sites!!) Do you think a host can keep backups for thousands of sites off site easily? You should *always* have your own backups where possible. It's common sense really.

2. Change all admin usernames and passwords.

3. Plan ahead for next time. Note the things that were difficult or impossible this time, and plan for them. If your site got hacked once, it can get hacked again. There's nothing you can do to completely prevent it. Just be more prepared for it next time.

What specifically happened to your site? Can't you re-upload you backup files and set your file permissions to a secure value than 777...?
