The main differences I've noticed:
-Windows has ASP
-Most Windows hosting plans use helm, which is just a pain in the *** to use.
-Your host, like mine, will most likely provide cPanel with your linux plan. cPanel is just amazing. mine is arvixe.com, btw.

Windows plans should only be used if you have something that will only specifically run with it, like ASP scripts. Otherwise, I highly suggest linux. I've tried both and windows is just full of problems.

Good luck with your search.

This is a topic which never comes to an end. It all depends on you which platform you use. I would definitely recommend Linux. It is best in all regards.

Windows supports ASP.

The server-age old discussion. If you wanted to, NIX servers are generally better to go with. But they are more enterprise level than chat server.

Linux hosting is generally cheaper, and you will find on most servers that it is more reliable (this is from a guy who has run several hosting farms and has experience of most platforms). If you're wanting a chat server, you'll be better off with a hosting plan that is dedicated to Bandwidth and PHP (and maybe a bit of MySQL). PHPopenchat is quite a popular chat server. Alternatively, you could make a PHP/XML hybrid chat system (it would be semantically more accurate).

I wouldn't go for windows hosting unless i desperately need to use ASP, or other MS technology.

Most scripts are written in php which works better in linux servers.
Linux hosting is also cheaper.

Check http://www.webhostinghall.com/web_hosting_help.htm#8 for more reasons

ultranet
I Run a Win 98 computer that a friend was about to throw out. It's what 466 Mhz
Runs pretty good on a High Speed Connection. I'm sure you have that already.
Aren't chat server's usually scripted in PHP? If so then try http://www.Aprelium.com web server install their PHP preconfigured package... even a newbie can do it in an hour. Their tutorials are awesome.

Check if your chat can run on a Linux server, and if it can, don't hesitate to use Linux, it's more stable and definitely cheaper, but you'll have to find a site administrator to manage it.

What kind of script do you need? A Linux platform is more popular than Windows one and it's free-of-charge unlike Windows.

It's more like which script you will decide to use, which determines whether you will need linux or windows platform.

What kind of a chat site you looking to create? A forum or instant chat?
