What everyone needs to realize is that signature links aren't that important to search engines. I might help you get crawled a bit but overall the level of importance is very low. I have also read recently that Google is working on ways to identify self-created links. That would be forum signatures, blog comments, wiki's, things like that. In terms of signature links, there is much more value in getting people to see them and want to click on them (and maybe link back to you!), and the way you do that is to provide actual valuable content that helps others. Review some sites, or bring up a new topic for discussion - don't copy and paste some stuff from another site.

Here are some resources if you're interested in using forums for SEO:

101 Ways to build link popularity in 2006 - scroll down to "30 Bad Ways to Build Links" and read the section on "Forum Spam"
Signaturel links at the Forums - from SEOMoz, be sure to read the comments
Forum signature links - any relevance with SEO? - forum thread, these people say that after the first link from a given domain the rest don't matter.
Forum/Signature Links - short but sweet, from SEOMoz again.
