My last paragraph wasn't my own advice, that's what your registrar suggests.

In your particular case, where your nameservers are maintained by your host, yes it is wrong, for the MX record at least. If by "dns settings" they meant "which nameservers your domain points to", then that part is right. However, if you were using a nameserver provided by your registrar rather than the host, then it would be right -- and I think Stinky assumed you were.

It's possible your host is using a third party to provide limited DNS services, in which case they wouldn't be able to change much. But it doesn't sound like from their emails. They seem to think you want to change nameservers, not CNAME records.

Seems like your registrar is right and you might have a mistunderstanding with your host.

Through your registrar, you can change which nameservers heebie.co.uk points to. That is, requests to heebie.co.uk will look up dns1.freehostia.com. Your host can't change this.

The nameservers appear to be run by your host, and this is where DNS records and settings are kept, including CNAME records.

Since your nameservers are currently provided by your host, they should be able to let you manage your DNS records. Make sure they know that this is what you want, and they don't think you simply want to change which nameservers heebie.co.uk points to.

Your registrar offered to let you use their nameservers instead of your host's, so that you might change DNS records via the registrar's control panel or whatever.

Hope that clarifies things a little.

lol... idiots. Talk about giving you the run around. I'm a supervisor in a support department for a large UK ISP and if any of my guys ever messed a customer around like that I would be having a word in their ear. Their first reply to you should have clarified everything you needed to know - it's not like changing nameservers is a complicated thing.

So then what do you guys think of this conversation with my domain name registrar:
I'd like to change some DNS records for my domain, heebie.co.uk, but the option doesn't seem to be available.
On 2006-09-25 08:24:31, xxxx changed the ticket status to CLOSE-PENDING and wrote:
Hi xxxx,

Thanks for the ticket. The domains is not on our nameservers and so we do not control DNS for the domains, as you can see from the whois below.

[Querying whois.nic.uk]
[whois.nic.uk]

    Domain name:
heebie.co.uk

    Registrant:

    Registrant type:
UK Individual

    Registrant's address:
The registrant is a non-trading individual who has opted to have their
address omitted from the WHOIS service.

    Registrant's agent:
Last updated: 14-Aug-2006

    Registration status:
Registered until renewal date.

WHOIS lookup made at 08:22:39 25-Sep-2006

If you wish I can put the domain back onto our nameservers and restore access for DNS management if you wish. Just let me know if that is what you want me to do.

On 2006-09-25 13:14:37, you changed the ticket status to OPEN and wrote:
Hi and thanks for your reply. I contacted my host (freehostia) asking them to change my DNS information such as CNAME. They said that they just host the website and have no control over the domain; to change advanced DNS records I must contact my registrar.

Some quotes from our conversation:
"You will be able to do this only if you ask your domain name registrar. We are not able to make such changes to your domain name records."

"You have to ask the domain name registrar. You just host your domain name with us and we do not have domain name control."

So I'm at a bit of a loss - if they can't do it and you can't do it, then how do I do it. If I change the nameservers back to you then my website won't point to my hosting account.

Cheers
On 2006-09-25 13:18:44, Robert Berry changed the ticket status to CLOSE-PENDING and wrote:
Hi xxxx,

Thanks for the reply. Are you just wanting to get the nameservers changed? If so, then I can do that for you. Otherwise DNS is handled by those people who run the nameservers you use, which unfortunately is not us.

You said: "You have to ask the domain name registrar. You just host your domain name with us and we do not have domain name control."

My registrar says: "DNS is handled by those people who run the nameservers you use, which unfortunately is not us."
"

And they replied:

"
Hello,

As I can see the DSN-es of the heebie.co.uk domain are the correct ones:

dns1.freehostia.com
dns2.freehostia.com

We can't change them because the domain isn't registered with us.
"

So they're saying they can't change the DNS records because the domain isn't registered with them, and you're saying tha t you can't change the DNS records because the domain isn't hosted with you.
When you change nameservers do the DNS settings change? So could I change the nameservers over to you, change the DNS settings then change the namservers back to them?
On 2006-09-25 14:37:43, Robert Berry changed the ticket status to CLOSE-PENDING and wrote:
Hi xxxx,

Thanks for the reply. Yes of course they do, nameservers run DNS for the domain so that it points to the right place. So changing them and then changing them back will do no good whatsoever. If you want your current hosting to continue working, this is something that only the present nameserver holders can do for you and no one else.
