Relfections are the result of over zealous marketing guys saying "can't we do this?"... and then the developers who complete the work and know they will have to replace the reflections with something else later.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

It is a trend as most have said, it won't last that long because everyone is overusing them so much in their designs. People will get bored of the things before long.

I have to agree with locatepeople. Some like it, others don't. It's the trend right now, but I'm sure it will fall the way of animated GIF eventually.

I think they're pretty lame actually. I mean, why is a 2D image reflecting on a 2D page? And why is the page so shiny in the first place? The only ones I really think are okay are the ones on the .... wait, nope, don't like any of them.

Here is a sign that the reflection trend has reached the total lameness point (skip the flash intro to get to the main interface. You could watch it if you want to see a funny example of really lame Web 2.0 marketing bullshit)

I was thinking about this the other day. They're ok if used well (like apple does) but can look tacky if used wrong.

PS.. here's a javascript I found that does all the leg work for you... (link: Reflection.js

They were big back some 7-9 years ago, the java applets were everywhere, then they went to animated gifs (think I still have a couple). but they were the wavy reflections. Today the have just taken off the wavey effect.

I like the first comment on that page (if you can get down there, very slow loading page)
*hate sites that jam the text hard against the margin*
