You can try this... go to desktop, right-click on the icon of "my computer", click properties then click "Automatic Updates" Tab , then tick on "Turn off automatic update" and then press apply or ok... that should stop the automatic update service... You can turn it back on if you want to update with the same procedure...

thanks very much for all your help i found out it is the automatic windows update that causes the problem is there any way to fix this ?

A program you could use is Thread Master. I'm not sure if you have heard of it but it allows you to manage the amount of CPU usage programs take up. This is primarily used to stop anti-virus software hogging all the CPU when installing updates etc. but you may be able to use it to solve your issues.

Try removing any uneeded hardwares on your PCI slots, and If you have ob-board Video controller, remove your Video card from the AGP and use the onboard one, this lets you get rid of malfunctioning hardware if its the cause... then do a trial and error to find the faulty hardware...

A much simpler tip is try and go to safemode. When you go to XP safemode and the PC runs without a problem or the svchost file doesnt act up, then that means that one of your drivers for your devices is the culprit... Now if you have the same problem during safemode, try and swap from a friend an HDD(hard disk drive) and try installing there... If this doesnt solve anything, post here again any of your observations while doing the things above..

right i have managed to get rid of the host.exe problem but i am still stuck with the svchost.exe eating my cpu i scanned my pc for
viruses spyware e.c.t and still keep getting it.
The only svchost files i have are in windows folders so i dont think its a virus.

When i end the process and then try to enter volume controll i get an error msg saying

There are no active mixer devices installed to install mixer devices, go to control panel, click printers and other harware, then click add hardware.

This program will now close [ok]

Any new ideas would be much appreciated

right i have now reinstalled xp for like the 9th time and i have still got the svchost.exe problem but now i have got another process taking up my cpu untill it stalls my pc called Host.exe
when i boot my pc it boots normal then this process takes over and eats my cpu
is there anything i can do????

it more or less stops my pc responding at all if i catch it in time i can end the process before it causes a problem but i cant get rid of the problem all together
and once i end that process the svchost.exe starts again
PLEASE HELP!!!!!! :confused:

P.s I just noticed that when i disable svchost my volume controll stops working could it be to do with my sound drivers?
