Next time this happens, you dont need to reinstall something... Just open any folder on your PC, go to Tools>Folder Options...>File Types Tab, then look for the PHP file extension, and change its file association... that would revert back to being its original file association...

Well lets see, Microsft has ASP, to which PHP is their "competition", so typical Microsoft thinking is most likely "We don't need PHP, so we'll use that extention for our own use".

Or they just want to do exactly what happened here, mess up people using their "competition".

Actually though, it is not just microsoft. When I installed Print Shop so i could work on someone elses files, it took over the PHP extension too.

Unfortunately you only have to install a program for it to associate itself with files. It's a bit daft that it associates itself with PHP files (an Open Source scripting language), if I were more suspicious I might suggest a conspiracy.

Yeah It wouldn't even open the files with the "file->Open" way.

I never use the Microsoft Digital Imaging program so I just deleted it. Files are back to normal now.

Still find it odd though cause I've never even opened the program, but it still stole the files

What if you open up the editor and do FILE->OPEN and then selet them. If this doesn't work then something has changed your files.

Most likely it is just that the associated program to open the file has changed. In windows explorer, you should be able to right click on the file and do OPEN WITH -> CHOOSE PROGRAM...
From here choose your prefered editor, and make sure the "ALWAYS USE SELECTED PROGRAM" option is selected and then from then on out it should use this from now on.
