I've referred to marquees as the "carnies of the web." They're trying to get your attention, but all they really end up doing is distracting from the real content of your website.

This might be the case, but have you tried one of the far more accessible ways of writing a header for your pages first?

Like putting it in a normal h1 tag that people can read? Or a heading and some text beneath it? I know what I'd rather see!

Marquees should never be used, ever. They're not part of any HTML specifications and break both 508 and WCAG guidelines ( http://www.contentquality.com/tutorial/j71.htm ).

Those are the technical reasons, not only that but marquee tags are hideous! Don't use them because they'll make your site look bad! Honestly, it's not the 90's anymore.

Marquees must be used carefully, If at all. Sometimes young web designers will become over zealous and start the entires pages text zooming across the screen!

An old trick was to hit the stop button in the browser, used to stop those annoying marquees, not sure if the newer browser can do that now though.

Ooops. Never mind. It's working for me as the visitors are taking time to read it as i've noticed an increase in people signing the Guestbook etc. since the Marquee text has been there.

you may use the marquee but make the text move little slowly enough for the visitors to read it. and dont use long sentences.
