I have had big annoyances with printing web pages lately. The biggest problem I have is with font sizes showing up really small in the printed version, and headings not being formatted properly. It makes it really difficult to read.

LOL, I was pretty sure ALA had done something on this in the past, and what do you know, on a google search they're the #1 result!

Greg, if you have navigation etc on the side just use hide (display:none) on those ina seperate style sheet, anything that isn't related to the content being printed.

Don't forget also to take in cosideration of our pag will be soemthing people have to print. I used to get so tired of going to print a page and it chopped off at the right. I'm now used to telling it to print web pages landscape mode now.

Anyone with a good tutorial page on setting up a page with one CSS for viewing on the screen and different one for when you hit print?

I think that stats are a good guide to go by. They're not going to take everything into account but can at least give you a clue as to how users are seeing your site.

At work I keep my window taskbar on the right side and Opera panels on the left so my viewable screen width is about 800px. I actually prefer this width for most sites because it keeps the line lengths readable and most designs look better when they're not too stretched out.

I have actually worked on a computer once, that even with IE maximized, with all the toolbars and crap installed, the viewable window was less than half the total screen size! Rediculous!

But did you ever stop to wonder how many of these veiwers have the toolbars set to the side instead (or as well as the top) ? no stats will show that. and what about the people who don't have their browser windows at full page, before tabbed browsing came along I often had two or three windows open at 1/3 screen size (and at 800x600).

Stats are a load of bull puckie, they never take into consideration peoples options/settings and also depends on the type of site you have.
Most new moniters come out set at 1024x768 but still have the option to go down to 800x600. Gamers and PC folk would more than likely have big screens, ma and pa kettle who just use it to buy the odd thing, email their sibblings etc probably have the smaller size.

Everyone is going bigger in screen size and some web designers are building to bigger, what about hand held? the , hand held and ipod etc even mobile phones. Imagine trying to fit a site designed for 1024x768 onto a mobile phone display.
