Sounds like you need a better ftp program.

Depending on the setting of your ftp program once you place the period in front of the name you may not see it, using -la in your directory options (depends on the ftp as to where you put it) will display it

Make sure that the .htaccess file gets uploaded in ACSII mode, not bianary. Also you may need to set permissions for the .htacess file.

If it won't allow you to upload it, you can always create a file called ".htaccess" in your phpBB directory and copy and paste the code from the downloaded package into the new copy.

.htaccess is a file that is used to control who can enter folders on websites and such server-based informations. It may be fairly important to the forum - you really need to put the period back in
