Why on Earth would you want to make your own markup language? What will yours do that will provide a compelling alternative to xml/xhtml?! And what browsers will support it? Opera's support for rubbish is pretty good but not that good.

The news about Safari etc is interesting, although am miffed Opera didn't do it first.

And ie supporting standards? Probably not a good thing, I wish they'd just leave it alone so people would switch to Opera or FF, or even better only make it work on that daft Longhorn half-baked O/S that's not going to be backwards compatible. *chortle*

You can just tell that Microsoft will secure their market share, get devs back on their side then start inserting their own functionality so people get locked-in to their product, they did it with ie before, they'll do it with ie again.

Reviving this thread for a few updates today:

And, in other big news, SAFARI has become the first publicly released browser to officially pass ACID 2. Alright Safari! *** applause *** (of course, it must be mentioned that Opera 9 is close behind )

What version of Opera is that? I've got 8.01 and it's a lot better than what you've got. Give me a minute and I'll upload what I get.

Opera is really close. It's the only one that actually looks somewhat like it's supposed to. I think it qualifies as a "pass". Firefox is close but not as close as O. I'm not sure about Safari at all....

I meant to reply to this when it was first posted but I keep forgetting! I can't believe that this is getting so much attention really. IE now has tabs, whoop-de-do. Opera had tabs when I first started using it almost 4 years ago (they've actually had them since the beginnning!). Opera has also had RSS for a long time now, Opera and Mozilla still have much, much better CSS support. MS is saying that more CSS bugs will be fixed in beta 2 but it doesn't sound like they're planning on making any big leaps in what is actually supported.

To add to that, it will not be available to people using older versions of the OS, which means it will likely take years to phase out IE6. So here we are, stuck at the same support levels, and for how long? IE 7 won't even be ready for full release for another year, and then what - 2-3 more years to get people upgraded?

This is really sad actually. We have all these great standards, and most browser (Opera, Mozilla, safari etc.) are supporting them well but we may never be able to actually use them becuase Microsoft can't be bothered. They are the biggest, richest browser maker of them all - why can the smaller browser makers manage to make such a superior project with much, much less resources??? Ticks me off. MS is just holding all of us back, and the internet back, and for some reason I feel like they're doing it on purpose.

(of course, that last bit is just me being irrational )
